ABRADEM® – What It Is & Why It Works
Abradem® powder is made of three ingredients.
- Microscopic Freshwater Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Particles: These microscopic particles are the remains of ancient single-cell freshwater algae (Aulacoseira) that retained their cylindrical shape as they petrified into stone (amorphous silica) over millions of years. Today, thick layers of these fossilized particles are mined from the dry lakebeds of these ancient lakes. Because Abradem® is made from uncalcinated DE, it contains only safe amorphous silica, and none of the dangerous-to-breathe crystalline silica.
- Chitosan: is a liquid made from chitin, a raw material found in crustacean shells. Chitosan is an organic biodegradable biopolymer that outperforms synthetic polymers. Abradem® uses chitosan as a coupling agent. We spray a thin coating of chitosan on our DE as a primer. A primer coating is necessary in order to permanently attach another, even thinner (nanosheet) coating of our third ingredient, manganese dioxide.
- Manganese Dioxide (MnO2): By using a special process to spray a dilute aqueous solution of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) onto our chitosan-coated DE, we are able to get nanosheets of MnO2 to coat each individual cylindrical particle – inside and out.

How ABRADEM® Activates & Can Keep Working Until the Job is Done
Dilute Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2): Abradem® powder is “activated” with dilute hydrogen peroxide just prior to being used for cleaning. Activation is done by mixing Abradem® powder into a dilute (~3%) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution to form a paste or slurry. Once activated, millions of our microscopic scouring particles become self-propelled (see video). Collectively, these hard, sharp, fast-moving particles will physically peen any surface residue or biofilm they come into contact with. It is the oxygen bubbles explosively escaping from the inside of each cylinder that cause Abradem® particles to become self-propelled. Our toxicologist calls Abradem® “fossil-rockets.” But these particles will only continue to be self-propelled while there is still hydrogen peroxide present within the slurry or paste.

Reactivation
Abradem® particles never degrade, they can be reactivated again and again with fresh peroxide until the cleaning is complete.
Abradem® Can Be Re-Activated Until the Cleaning Job is Completed
Within minutes of being initially activated, Abradem® particles will stop moving once all the nearby hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has been converted (catalyzed) into water (H2O) and oxygen (O2). The good news is that Abradem® particles never lose their ability to become self-propelled once they are again exposed to dilute hydrogen peroxide. So, Abradem® particles can be re-activated as often as necessary to finish a cleaning job. All that is required is to add more dilute hydrogen peroxide. The excess water created by previous activations will need to be drained away in order to maintain a slurry or paste consistency. This can be done by draining water from the top of the cleaning process containment, given that Abradem® particles will sink via gravity when not agitated.
