Boating & Yachts

The Hidden Challenge

Marine vessels, from private yachts to commercial boats face persistent biofilm formation on hulls, tanks, and interior systems.

Salt, organic matter, and fluctuating moisture create an environment where microorganisms attach and form resilient layers that resist conventional cleaning and degrade performance over time.

Where Biofilms Thrive

  • Hulls & Underwater Surfaces:
    • Accumulation of biofilms, salt, and organic debris increases drag and fuel consumption.
  • Bilges & Tanks:
    • Warm, nutrient-rich environments that allow microbial colonies to develop on both metal and polymer surfaces.
  • Plumbing & Water Systems:
    • Interior lines, holding tanks, and valves where stagnant water promotes biofilm buildup.
  • Decks & Fixtures:
    • High-contact, shaded areas where moisture and salt spray accumulate.
  • Storage & Cabins:
    • Air-exposed surfaces where humidity and organic residues sustain dry biofilms.

Why It Matters

Even microscopic layers of biofilm can compromise vessel performance and maintenance efficiency.

Unmanaged, they can:

  • Increase drag and reduce hydrodynamic efficiency.
  • Promote corrosion, odor, and microbial contamination.
  • Accelerate fouling and coating degradation.
  • Provide a conditioning layer that enables barnacles and mussels to attach and grow.
  • Elevate maintenance time and operational costs.

Abradem®’s Advantage

The Biofilm Adhesion Disruptor

Abradem®’s biofilm adhesion disruptor acts at the microscopic level to loosen the molecular bonds anchoring buildup to surfaces.

When activated by low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or compatible oxidizing chemistries, Abradem®’s patented micro-abrasives become self-propelled, reaching into tight spaces, seams, and porous coatings where biofilms are most difficult to remove. By disrupting the conditioning biofilm layer, Abradem® makes it more difficult for fouling organisms, including barnacles and mussels, to attach and establish colonies.

Results:

  • Cleaner hulls and internal systems.
  • Improved fuel efficiency and performance.
  • Reduced fouling and surface adhesion.
  • Extended coating and component lifespan.
  • Reduced reliance on harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubbing.
  • Suitable for both saltwater and freshwater vessels.
